"Find a job you love, and…"

November 14, 2018

A student told me he'd been given this guidance: "Find a job you love, and you'll never work a day in your life."

I told him I think this is terrible advice. Pure malarkey.

Does anyone really believe hard work and love are somehow mutually exclusive? Moreover, what's so appealing about the prospect of a life without work? Sounds like a slow death by apathy to me.

Want to succeed, joyfully? Then forget about what makes you feel happy for a while. Instead, find a job with a challenging purpose in which you genuinely believe, deeply. And then? Work your tail off at it.

That will yield joy, which is a hell of a lot more durable than happiness.
